A useful puzzle, ready to print

JotOak makes free printable word searches, themed crosswords and mazes. The goal is practical: help a teacher, parent or puzzle lover find a suitable puzzle without an account or a long search through files.

Choose a puzzle type first, then a theme or level. Word searches also have easy and large print collections, plus Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas themes. Each prepared puzzle has a matching answer key and separate US Letter and A4 files. The word search generator lets you make a puzzle with your own vocabulary.

How the puzzles are made

The published themes and word lists are selected for each puzzle. A deterministic algorithm places the words in a letter grid; easy puzzles use forward paths across and down, medium puzzles add diagonals, and hard puzzles use all eight directions.

The preview, PDF and answer key use the same grid and word locations. Automated checks verify that every listed word fits, appears once, and agrees with the answer key. We also inspect the printed layout and the vocabulary used in the published set.

Crosswords use selected answers and original clues in connected grids, with numbered starts for Across and Down. Mazes are built as a connected network with exactly one route between the entrance and exit. Their solution pages use the same underlying puzzle as the printable activity.

The custom word search generator runs locally in your browser. Your title and word list are not saved as public resources or included in analytics events.

Difficulty describes the grid and allowed directions. It is guidance rather than a reading assessment, and a younger reader may still need help with the word list. These activities are not a diagnosis or a complete curriculum.

Free for home and classroom use

You may download and print these free puzzles and worksheets for your family, your own classroom, a tutoring group or a homeschool activity. You can print multiple copies for the people you work with. These permissions also apply to custom word search PDFs made here.

Please do not resell the files, remove the JotOak source line, republish them as your own download library or bundle them into a paid product. To share them with other teachers or families, link to the JotOak page.
